OSMANIA UNIVERSITY

HYDERABAD – 500007

Hyderabad, September 19:

Osmania University is now engrossed in preparing proposals to stake claim to the “institutions of eminence” status and join the league of top educational institutions in the country.

The “eminence” status is part of a new government scheme to push the relatively better educational institutions to break into top-500 and top-100 world rankings by providing more funds and autonomy.

Having being graded A+ for seven years by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council recently, Osmania University qualifies to apply for the above status. The University meets the other criteria as it is placed 23 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) among universities. Institutions in the top 50 of the NIRF rankings are eligible to apply.Osmania University Vice Chancellor Prof. S. Ramachandram disclosed that the UGC had given a 90-day deadline for Universities to submit their proposals.

“The A+ grading has given a fillip to our efforts. We would like to sustain the same momentum and scale-up our academic and research activities to meet the stipulated conditions of the UGC,” he said.

The “eminence” status is open to both public and private institutions. twenty institutions — 10 public and 10 private — will be selected, and these “institutions of eminence” will be free from the regular regulatory mechanisms.

The institutions which can apply are divided into three categories — existing government educational institutions, existing private higher educational institutions and sponsoring organisation for setting up of private institutions. The status will be accorded after HRD Ministry-constituted  empowered expert committee processes the applications.

Once selected, the 10 state-run institutions will have an additional benefit — provision of Rs. 10,000 crore over a period of 10 years, over and above the regular grants. By March-April 2018, the chosen institutions will be accorded the status of “Institutions of Eminence” with a mandate to achieve world-class status over 10 years.

The mission is to set up universities with all-India character and with international standards. Also, for a large country like India, this opens up the possibility of providing globally recognized best education.

A + grade for seven years

It may be recalled that Osmania University has been accorded the  A+ Grade for seven years by National Assessment and Accreditation Council in the 3rd Cycle of Assessment done last month..

The University, celebrating its centenary, is the only educational institution from Telangana to be conferred this status and the only University in the country with A+ for seven years.

The NAAC grading enhances the academic prestige of the University nationally and globally. University officials feel that the A + grading would refurbish the varsity’s image .

The grading, comes close on the heels of the Times Higher Education World Rankings- 2018, where Osmania was one of the 30 Indian Universities to have made it to the top 1000 Universities. It is one among the eight State Government funded Universities in India to figure in the rankings despite facing a fund crunch and staff shortage.

OU Vice Chancellor, Prof S. Ramachandram,  congratulates the IQAC team, entire Faculty, non-teaching staff, students, research scholars and Alumni  for their cooperation and concerted efforts expressed happiness over the announcement.
